I promised that I would share my Paleo journey. In previous posts I mentioned that due to my autoimmune disease, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, I am going gluten-free. The research is here if you want to read my post.
Gluten-free is definitely a challenge for this Italian girl. When I started out a few months ago, I decided to go “gluten-free”: first. I immediately noticed a difference in that I saw less bloating. I had no idea that I had gluten-sensitivity . Remember I was doing this because of the research I found regarding auto-immune disease and gluten. Going gluten -free was not as difficult as I thought. There are many gluten-free products out there and as a matter of fact I fell into the “gluten -free snack trap”. I began to eat foods that I don’t normally eat just because now it said , “gluten-free”.
My next phase was to follow the Paleo plan. The Paleo plan is here if you want to read about it. On this plan, I began to eliminate all grains. This is NOT the Atkins plan. This is a lifestyle that also includes fruits and veggies. Once again, I continued to feel better. My goal was not to lose weight, but to improve my health. As my body began to heal, some of the bloat and weight came off without trying.
My third and final phase was to join the “Whole 30″ craze. ” Whole 30″ is considered ‘ Paleo on steroids’. You can read about it here. During this phase I took out all sweeteners which includes, agave and stevia. I have heard many positive testimonials regarding the Whole 30 and decided, I will try this next. Again, I am doing this because of my autoimmune disease.
Below you will find my results from going gluten-free. The blood test, C-Reactive Protein measures “the amount of a protein called C-reactive protein in your blood. C-reactive protein measures general levels of inflammation in your body. High levels of CRP are caused by infections and many long-term diseases. But a CRP test cannot show where the inflammation is located or what is causing it. Other tests are needed to find the cause and location of the inflammation.” (WebMd)
Results from going completely Gluten-free:
C-Reactive Protein lowest it’s been in 6 years
I will continue to update you as I go through the Whole 30. I am not a doctor. Always consult your doctor when changing diet or exercise program.
I posted that picture because that’s the type of pictures I see associated with oil pulling and it seems oil pulling is sweeping the country. But, I can assure you that is not what my face looked like.
So , by popular demand, I’m doing an article on oil-pulling. I’m not against anything alternative, as a matter of fact, I explore alternative and natural treatments for medical conditions. However, I do need some science and/or real testimonies; I don’t believe everything I read!
Setting the scene
This was the day that I was going to do something that has been sweeping the globe and touted by celebrities, it’s called Oil-Pulling.
I read an article that says to “pull oil” (I have no idea if that is the proper way to say it) when you take a shower. I felt, it made sense, I may get busy washing my hair and completely forget that I was swishing with oil. By the way, if you want to know how to “oil pull” go here
What I did
So I took my coconut oil (solid at room temp) and my teaspoon to the shower with me. Put a teaspoon of coconut oil in my mouth and jumped in the shower then started swishing. Just a heads up, I have an extremely sensitive gag reflex, so you can imagine the first thing I wanted to do was “gag”. So I said to myself, “If Gweneth Paltrow can do this, so can I, mind over body “. I kept telling myself that I was doing this for my health, my blog, my friends, I am strong, I can overcome! So I went about swishing, washing my hair, swishing etc. I was actually doing it, I was oil-pulling or pulling- oil. As soon as I washed my hair my attention was suddenly on the oil in my mouth, swishing together the oil and the saliva. I began to feel sick… I usually take a long shower, but I’m thinking that today, it probably was the shortest shower ever taken. Again, I said to myself, as I was turning off the shower, “I can do this, If Gweneth, can do it, so can I, I am strong” So I dried myself off, put on a happy, face and proceeded with the worst gagging sound, of my life, spitting it out in the sink. The next thing I heard was my husband asking me if everything was o.k. This made things worse, because I think that the drama of it all got me excited and I thought for sure I would vomit. I came close. I also, think I swallowed coconut oil and some websites say that it’s toxic after you swish , so not only did “acid” come up, which I’m sure is going to rot my teeth but I swallowed a toxic substance. Fantastic, it did the very opposite.
What in The World
I mean really, if I’m going to do this again there better be some research behind it. And if anyone can do this for 20 minutes, more power to them. The only research I found shows that oil-pulling improves dental heath and kills Streptococcus mutans, but so do a lot of other things.Streptococcus Mutansis a Gram-positive bacteria that lives in the mouth.. It metabolizes carbohydrates, creating acidic environment in the mouth . This acidic environment in the mouth is what causes the tooth decay. It is the leading cause of dental caries (tooth decay) worldwide.
Claims of Oil-Pulling
It appears to cure it all!!!
Where are the studies
There were a few studies on PubMed regarding dental health (gingivitis, bad breath) The studies claim that oil pulling kills Streptococcus Mutans.
Click here for studies involving oil pulling and oral health and still more here
I feel lately, that everything somehow comes back to Essential oils. I found that Essential Oils can kill Streptococcus Mutans . While I was researching about oil pulling, I had no idea that an essential oil may work and I certainly didn’t know that Listerine was made of essential oils. Some may worry about the alcohol in Listerine but it is also sold without the alcohol. Listerine kills Streptococcus Mutans.
Active ingredients in Listerine:
methyl salicylate (oil of wintergreen or wintergreen oil), and
thymol (found in thyme essential oil and oil of oregano)
Oil Pulling is not for me, and to tell you the truth, I don’t see any research that substantiates the claims, except for the killing of bacteria and I would rather do that another safe, natural way like the essential oil mouth washes that I found. If you have any evidence on the contrary, please share, I would love to see it!
